Colonel Leona Barr-Jones graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in 1991 and commissioned into the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC), before transferring to the Adjutant General’s Corps - AGC(SPS) with a full career focused on Personnel and Training.
Serving as a Military Instructor for both basic and trade training and with the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT) in South Africa, where the team were awarded the Wilkinson Sword of Peace and UNITAS Medal. At Regimental Duty she served with 104th (Air Defence) (V) Regiment Royal Artillery and 40th (Field) Regiment Royal Artillery and as Regimental Administrative Officer (RAO) of 14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare). She was Officer Commanding at the Defence College of Policing and Personnel Administration (DCPPA) with operational tours of Bosnia and Kosovo.
At staff she served in Army Headquarters, 2 Infantry Brigade; Armed Forces Personnel Administration Agency (AFPAA). In MoD Main Building, Whitehall in Personnel Policy, Defence Diplomacy and International Policy and Planning and Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) before leaving Regular Army Service in 2011.
As an Army Reservist, she served as Training Major at Cambridge University Officer Training Corps (CUOTC) and in Employer Engagement, before attending Advanced Command and Staff Course (Reserves) (ACSC (R)) at the Defence Academy in 2013 on selection for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and served as SO1 Reserves Command Support at the Army Personnel Centre (APC), Glasgow.
She holds post graduate Diplomas in Strategic Direction, Leadership and Management from Cranfield University, King’s College London and Manchester Business School (MBS). She is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors (FIoD), the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI) and the Institute of Leadership and Management (FInstLM). She is a Graduate Member of the City and Guilds Institute (MCGI). She is a Freeman of the City of London and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers.
Colonel Barr-Jones was appointed as Commandant Essex ACF in April 2019 following two years as Deputy Commandant (Training). She is IoD East of England Ambassador for Diversity and Inclusion and the Armed Forces, sits on the National ACF Diversity and Inclusion (ACF Step Change) Steering Group and is the Chair of the ACF LGBT+ Forum and an anti-bullying Diversity RM Role Model.
