The passing of Bob Barker BEM

The Commandment of Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Army Cadet Force is sad to announce the passing of Bob Barker BEM. Bob started his military career with the Norfolk regiment and served in the Korean War where Bob was injured during his tour, receiving shrapnel to his back, which he carried with him for the rest of his life. After serving with the regular army, Bob joined the TA signals regiment in Bedford, as a SSgt. He enjoyed a long career with the unit, being an excellent shot, Bob coached the Bedford signals team, taking them to Bisley and winning the annual shoot. Bob joined Beds ACF in the 70s his experience and dedication to the organisation were unwavering. Bob spent most of his ACF time supporting the Kempston detachment, where he held numerous roles. As a secondary role, Bob was the county armour at camps for many years his armoury was run on very tight lines and you did as you were told when you stepped into his domain! After retiring from the ACF, Bob still continued to support the Kempston detachment, with stores and accounts, he did this up until 2021, again showing his dedication to service. Bob was awarded the BEM for his services to the TA and cadet in 1981. Bob was a true volunteer and will be sorely missed by all who came into contact with him, there are many CFAVS within Beds & Herts, past and present that have learnt a lot from Bob over many years. SMI Barker, BEM, will now have his name added to The British Korean Veterans Association, Bedfordshire Branch Roll of Honour that is situated in St Peter’s church, Bedford, alongside his fellow comrades.
