The headquarters team of Clwyd and Gwynedd recently extended a warm welcome to Mike Garnett, a seasoned veteran of the British Army who joins the team following his retirement from regular service. The appointment of Mike Garnett comes in the wake of the appointment of Ivan Williams as the new Quartermaster.

Hailing from Wrexham, Mike’s journey into the world of military service started early. He began his military adventure by joining the Army cadets, an experience that ignited his passion for discipline, service, and camaraderie. His dedication and commitment were evident as he climbed the ranks, eventually achieving the rank of Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM).

At the age of 17, Mike enlisted in the Army. He embarked on his training specializing as a driver. His postings took him to various corners of the world, with a notable period spent in Germany as part of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR). It was during this time that Mike's talents and skills found a home in the Logistic Battalion of the 5th Airborne Brigade stationed in Aldershot.

One of the aspects of Mike Garnett's military career was his active participation in numerous international exercises. From the vast landscapes of Canada to the sun-soaked training grounds of Cyprus, the challenging terrains of Kenya, and the vibrant landscapes of Poland, Mike's experience was truly global. These exercises not only sharpened his tactical abilities but also enabled him to interact and collaborate with multinational forces, broadening his understanding of diverse military operations.

Mike's journey didn't stop at training and exercises; he was actively involved in operational tours. He served in Northern Ireland, Iraq, and Afghanistan, contributing to the multifaceted efforts of multinational forces. This exposure gave him valuable insights into the intricacies of international collaborations and the varying approaches taken by different countries in challenging situations.

One of Mike's accomplishments that highlights his dedication to nurturing future soldiers was his attainment of instructional qualifications. This allowed him to teach at the Army Apprentices College in Arborfield. The opportunity to shape young minds and mold civilians into capable soldiers was a responsibility Mike found immensely rewarding.

Beyond his military pursuits, Mike's interests expanded to encompass a passion for military history becoming a keen military historian. His fascination with history led him to organize family pilgrimages and tours to the historic battlefields of France and Belgium.

As he transitioned from active military service, Mike Garnett embarked on a new chapter. He seamlessly moved from the ranks into a different role. Stepping straight into summer camp, he continued to support the Cadets while acclimating to a different aspect of military life. With his extensive experience and expertise, he is now poised to take on the role of Cadet Admin Assistant based in Bethesda. In this capacity, Mike will be providing invaluable support to the Burma and Minden Company detachments.
