‘Mighty Hike’ Fundraising for Macmillan

‘Mighty Hike’ Fundraising for Macmillan

22 December 2023

  • Cambridgeshire ACF

Calling themselves the ‘Camo Chemo Warriors,’ 20 of our Adult Volunteers are taking part in the ‘Mighty Hike’, a Marathon length walk to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The inspiration for this fundraising is to support our former Cadet Executive Officer, Major Geoff Hammond, who was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago, and now undergoing chemotherapy. Major Hammond served in the Army before becoming our CEO and has served with us 15 years. His dedication to duty has proved to be an inspiration to many of our members.

Macmillan Cancer Support is an extremely important charity providing a variety of support to people with cancer, and to their families. Geoff’s daughter, Kirsty, said; ‘They have been fantastic with supporting the family, especially providing counselling for the girls (Geoff’s two granddaughters). I thought it was important to give something back.’

Training began with a seven and a half mile walk near Waterbeach earlier this month, and Kirsty commented on the enthusiasm from the participants. ‘Everyone was full of beans, the pace was good, everyone was happy.’ Further walks will take place on the Norfolk Coast at the end of the month, and in Thetford Forest in the new year, with a trip to Wales planned for February. There will also be a fund-raising coffee morning on 4th May 2024. The final 26.2 mile walk will take place in the Wye Valley next September.

Si Nicole Gibbs said; ‘I'm loving taking part, its a great cause. A few family members have been affected by cancer. It helps raise money to research into possible cures that could help in the future.’

Kirsty, said: ‘Its amazing, I didn’t expect so many people to take part. Many of them know Geoff very well, and want to show their support. The Army Cadet Force is like a family.’
