By 2Lt Alan Warnock, Middleton Detachment Commander, No 1 (Minden) Company
Councillor Dylan Williams recently paid a visit to Middleton Detachment and was treated to a number of stands showcasing the subjects taught to cadets, this included first aid, military knowledge, and drill, which Councillor Williams even had a go at!
The Councillor was very interested in each stand asking the cadets questions throughout. Councillor Williams then gave a very informative talk to the cadets on the role and responsibilities of a councillor as well as how local politics work.
The cadets enjoyed the opportunity to show case their talents and the skills learnt at detachment, and thoroughly enjoyed the discussion with Councillor Williams on local politics.
Councillor Williams said: “I had a fantastic evening at Greater Manchester Army Cadets, Middleton is my East Middleton Ward. Thank you to 2Lt Warnock and all the Cadets for inviting me as the local Councillor to come and see what you do and asking me to do a talk on what being a Councillor involves and how local government works.
It’s amazing what they do at the Middleton Detachment and a good number of teenagers attend. It was great to see all the skills they learn and how this has helped generations of youths have a better start into adulthood from the life skills they learn as an army cadet.
I really enjoyed hearing from the cadets what they do, explaining to me how army cadets work and also seeing demonstrations of what they do.
Thank you to 2Lt Warnock and his team who do amazing voluntary work running Middleton Army Cadets, you are clearly making a very positive difference in the young people’s lives who attend. I’m really proud that we have this fantastic Army Cadet Detachment in Middleton. They and all the Cadets are an absolute credit to the town”.
