On Sunday, 17 March 2024, Greater Manchester ACF Corps of Drums played a significant role in a ceremony honouring Colonel Eric Davidson, DL, MBE, who passed away in May 2022 at the age of 84. Col Davidson dedicated almost fifty years to various activities, prominently including organising Bury's Annual Remembrance Day Parade, with cadets from No 1 (Minden) Company participating in these events over many years.
The ceremony aimed to unveil road signs renaming Spenleach Lane in Hawkshaw to 'Col Eric Davidson Way.' This act is a tribute to Colonel Davidson's commitment to service and his contributions to the community. Distinguished figures in attendance including the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Diane Hawkins, Greater Manchester ACF Hon Col Vice Lord-Lieutenant Sharman Birtles, JP DL MBE, the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Sandra Walmsley, Leader of Bury Council Cllr Eamonn O'Brien, Col Martin Newman and Chief Executive of NWRFCA Mark Underhill DL OBE were present to unveil the signs.
The renaming of Spenleach Lane holds special significance as it leads to Holcombe Moor Training Camp, where Colonel Davidson spent considerable time in his youth and later volunteered, mentoring cadets and organising charitable events like the Krypton Factor Assault Course.
Colonel Davidson's daughter Michelle expressed her family’s immense pride in his achievements and thanked everyone for the support her mum, Mrs Majorie Davidson, and their family had received and their gratitude for the fitting tribute to her father's legacy.
Bury Council Leader, Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, reflected on the significance of renaming the road to 'Col Eric Davidson Way,' highlighting its role in inspiring future generations and reminding passersby of Colonel Davidson's remarkable contributions to Bury and its armed forces community.
