Cadets and Adult Volunteers, from A & D Companies, came together at the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Derbyshire Freemasons on Saturday to receive a £500 donation to each Detachment.

Cadets formed up, under the direction of Staff Cadet Sergeant Major Jack Hallworth, and were then led inside the historic building once owned by Rolls Royce and the development facility for the Merlin Engine used in World War II aircraft and tanks. Inside the Lodge room, the Freemasons gave a warm welcome and the presentations began under the direction of Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Ian Copestake, who was flanked by Derbyshire High Sheriff Theresa Peltier and senior members of the Provincial Grand Lodge.

Senior Adult Volunteer Major Wakeling delivered a speech that highlighted the common Values of Integrity, Respect for Others, Selfless Commitment and the friendships that ensure strong foundations for both organisations. Derbyshire ACF’s Honorary Colonel, record-breaking distance cyclist Leigh Timmis, inspired the audience with his achievements and the importance of preparation and determination in order to go further in life. Derbyshire ACF’s talented band completed the ceremony with two musical pieces and the National Anthem.

The Freemasons’ generosity continued with a hot buffet lunch and ice cream! There was much talk about how each Detachment could spend their money, with Ashbourne Detachment Commander SI Mlot, saying, “We are going to purchase some new expedition equipment to support cadets undertaking their DofE Awards”, and Swadlincote Detachment Commander SI Day, saying, “we would like IT equipment – such as a smart board - to enable us to deliver quality training to the cadets and any surplus monies will be used towards a team-building day out”.

Altogether, with the presentations to B & C Companies in June 2023, Derbyshire Freemasons has donated a total of £16,000 to Derbyshire ACF and we are very thankful. This money will be invested in to the Cadet Experience which sets cadets up for life.

The funds will help hundreds of Derbyshire cadets to realise their full potential and for that I am extremely grateful. The cadets and the band acquitted themselves perfectly and, as always, did the ACF proud.”
