Day 4 of Annual Camp 2023

26 August 2023

  • Greater Manchester ACF

SMI Debbie Callaghan, County Media Officer

Our Honorary Colonel Sharman Birtles MBE JP DL, Vice Lord-Lieutenant, and her husband Grahame visited camp today. During her visit, Col Sharman Birtles was given a presentation by our Commandant, Colonel Catherine Harrison, updating her on the latest news from Greater Manchester ACF.

After the presentation, Col Sharman Birtles went out to visit the camp's various activities. Cadets were actively engaged in different pursuits, and Colonel Sharman Birtles took the time to not only observe but also speak with numerous cadets at each activity. Some cadets even provided a demonstration of how to use laser tag weapons, which were being used for a simulated 'battle' that the cadets absolutely loved.

Lance Corporal Taylor and Fusilier McLeish from 5 Fusiliers (A Company) shared valuable insights on handling the laser tag weapons before returning to the Obstacle Course which both soldiers have been running each day.

Colonel Sharman Birtles visited the Obstacle Course. Here, she observed as cadets received a demonstration on safely navigating the obstacles. Fusilier McLeish demonstrated the process while Lance Corporal Taylor guided the cadets on what to do on the course, ensuring their safety throughout.

In addition to the Obstacle Course, Colonel Sharman Birtles explored various other areas of the camp. These included the DCCT (Dismounted Close Combat Trainier), Skill at Arms (SAA) lessons, the 25m Barack Range and Basher Building. At the SAA session, a special recognition took place. Major Martin Davies, who has dedicated an impressive 37 years of volunteer service to Greater Manchester ACF, was presented with his 4th Clasp and Gold Rosette.

Two other presentations were made at different times during the day. Col Sharman Birtles presented SSI Daniel Young and Lt Pete Jackson with their well-deserved 12 years, long serve medals.

Lunch and evening meal was enjoyed with cadets with Col Sharman Birtles leaving after a long and very enjoyable day.
