D Company's SOA, Capt Gavin Atherton, was one of the hardy volunteers who undertook the trek of over 30 km from one West Yorkshire club to the other (The group is pictured above, with Capt Atheron far left).
Along the way, he collected an
agonising total of 18 blisters, but it did not deter him from completing
his challenge. Fighting through the intense pain, and ignoring
persistent thoughts of "Never again!" en route, he raised an amazing
£1160 of his group's total of over £4000 to go towards the two charities
being supported by Match For Heroes: Help 4 Homeless Veterans and the
Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund.
It's now on to the big event to be
held at Golcar United in Huddersfield on 1st May. Matches include West
Yorkshire Police v 1st Bn Yorkshire Regiment, Army Veterans v
Celebrities (in which Capt Atherton will play a starring role) and
Huddersfield Town Legends v Golcar United Legends.
D Company's cadets will also be supporting the event on the day with a guard of honour for all the matches.
Captain Atherton, who is also a current holder of the Lord Lieutenant's Award (West Yorks) Award, is a wonderful example of the dedicated volunteers who make up our CFAV staff. Everyone in D Company and, indeed, the County as a whole is extremely proud of him.
