Col. Rupert joined Somerset ACF in June 1994 after leaving the regular army. His impact was immediate, starting at Crewkerne Platoon he quickly moved forward to assume command at Yeovil Platoon and head up the Adventure Training Team where he reinvigorated AT within the battalion. When he took command of Salamanca Company in 2010 he he did so with knowledge, enthusiasm and a unique leadership style which would further the cadet experience.

To the surprise of no one who knew him, he would move up to become Deputy Commandant and eventually Commandant of the Somerset Cadet Batallion.

Rupert was a brilliant and charismatic leader who knew how to bring out the best in everyone around him. He made a massive difference in people’s lives and inspired both adults and young people who served in the cadets, he enabled and encouraged them to move forward to incredible things and be the best version of themselves they could be.

Rupert was brave and courageous, even after being informed he was unwell. He continued to serve and refused to be beaten by his illness, he only stood down as commandant when he decided his family must come first as his illness progressed.

His ethos of finding potential in everyone permeated through every aspect of life, not just in cadets but also through his business, Able2Achieve, which is about helping others to recognise their potential. His loss will have a great impact on all those involved in the organisation and our thoughts are with them at this time. Many owe their careers and way of life to Col Rupert.

While 59 years may seem like too short a time, Rupert packed in a lot through the period, from being the youngest man to pass selection for the SAS through to his passion for driving classic cars, Rupert was not a man to let an opportunity pass him by. It is impossible to list everything he’s done, and the people he’s helped and inspired, but every single one of us will remember him and his memory will live on.

Col Rupert, we thank you for everything you did for us, you will continue to inspire us, Rest in Peace.
