Cdt Sgt Laird - Walking with the Wounded Christmas Challenge

18 December 2023

  • Lothian And Borders Battalion ACF

The challenge: To walk 100km for "Walking Home for Christmas" to help raise funds to provide a vital service to provide physical and mental heath care for veterans across the UK.

Cdt Sgt Laird: Challenge Accepted!

This December I have been partaking in Walking with the Wounded's Christmas challenge "Walking Home for Christmas" where I am walking 100km in December. The money I have raised will help fund vital physical and mental health care for veterans across the UK who are returning to civilian life following their service in the British Armed Services. I believe this is an incredibly important cause as I think we should look after those who have given their life to protecting us, and by raising money for this charity I feel I am giving back, even if in a tiny magnitude, to those who deserve it most. This cause is even more special to me as an Army Cadet, as I am surrounded by ex-service men and women who have not only given their time to protect the British public, but have then gone on to mentor and develop children through the ACF. Without charities like Walking with the Wounded, some of these ex-service people would simply not be able to readjust to civilian life, and this is why I have chosen to raise money for them. I am over halfway to hitting my target of £250, and I am extremely grateful for the support I have gained so far in my fundraising efforts.

What does it do?

Walking Home For Christmas is the annual, nationwide walking challenge to support our work helping wounded veterans re-ignite their sense of purpose and get back on their feet with positive physical and mental health.

Whether mentally wounded, socially wounded or physically wounded, they deserve the care, support and means they and their families need to function in society, serving in the communities in which they live, reigniting their sense of purpose and making a positive contribution again. Walking With The Wounded gets those who’ve served – and their families - back on their feet.
