On Saturday 9th July, SSI A Pritchard, Uffculme Detachment, and 3 cadets from C and D Companies headed to the Haslar Marina in Gosport to board the Boleh Yacht. They were joined by Captain Lucy Corner (County DofE Officer) who is supporting this week's excursion.

"I'm not sure what the cadets were expecting but none of them have had the opportunity to sail before. We arrived at Haslar Marina in Gosport and were met by the skipper for the week, Craig Coupe. The evening was spent settling in and gave the cadets a chance to get acquainted with their new home for the week and marina life. We also required them to come up with a menu plan for the week as part of the week is obviously to get them sailing but also give them life skill opportunities and build in resilience in themselves."

Monday started with bright sunshine, with the plan to sail from Haslar to East Cowes, only a short distance up the Solent, but before departing the crew motored up to get a closer look at the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier. The Yacht then anchored in Osborne Bay for lunch and a swim in the sea, which the cadet were more than happy to be involved in. Once clear of Portsmouth Harbour, it was time to hoist the sails where cadets got to develop their knowledge on the effects of wind and tide on the yacht, and how it hindered the boat speed and ability to head in a particular direction.

The yacht was then parked up at East Cowes, where a debrief from the day was given and supper was cooked.

We look forward to hearing more updates throughout the trip soon.
