Drill, Turnout & Military Knowledge

Drill, turnout and military knowledge are a key part of the Army Cadet syllabus teaching discipline, one of the Army Cadets core values. Teaching cadets to clean and iron their uniform and how to wear it. Then using the same movements as the British Army cadets are taught how to move in a smart and solider like manner to get from point A to point B using precise movements. This is what you’ll see them doing on events like remembrance Sunday and just to get around camp.

Military knowledge is key in learning the heritage of the Army Cadets and the units in which the cadets are affiliated to.

Drill, Turnout and Military Knowledge

Drill, Turnout & Military knowledge are key parts of the cadet experience, learning how and why you wear the military uniform and its heritage.

Drill is more than just learning how to march; it’s about precision, discipline, and working as part of a team. This organised practice of movement in unison teaches cadets how to respond to commands, maintain formation, and uphold the standards of the Army Cadets.

From learning basic turns and salutes to executing full marching routines, cadets develop skills that boost confidence and foster a sense of accomplishment. As you progress, you’ll not only refine your drill skills but also gain the ability to teach others, emphasising timing and key commands.

Drill has deep historical roots, originating as a method to maintain order in troops during long marches or battles. Today, it remains a symbol of discipline, with modern cadets showcasing these skills during events such as Remembrance Parades.

Turnout focuses on wearing your uniform and equipment correctly, reflecting the pride and discipline expected of every cadet. Maintaining a smart appearance is more than looking sharp; it demonstrates respect for the traditions of the British Army and your fellow cadets.

Guided by your instructors, you’ll learn how to care for your uniform, ensuring it remains pristine. From polishing boots to ensuring badges are correctly positioned, turnout becomes a point of pride as you march alongside your peers, embodying a tradition that spans thousands of years.

Military Knowledge complements Drill and Turnout by providing the context and history behind cadet training. Through this subject, cadets explore the structure and traditions of the British Army, the role of the military in society, and the history of iconic battles and leaders.

Starting with the basics, cadets learn about ranks, how to recognise these on military uniform and address those of different ranks, and the organisation of the Army Cadet syllabus. Progressing through their training, they dive into the customs of their regiment, military history, and the global influences shaping the Army’s role today.

By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, cadets gain an appreciation for teamwork, leadership, and the history that forms the foundation of their training. For those with the opportunity, a battlefield tour in Europe may even provide a hands-on experience of history in action.

Drill, Turnout, and Military Knowledge work hand in hand to shape confident, disciplined, and well-rounded cadets. From mastering precision marching to wearing your uniform with pride, these skills instil values that last a lifetime.
