Exercise Tay Challenger is the Army Cadet premier canoeing expedition. The River Tay is the longest river in Scotland. It winds its way through the scenic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands before flowing into the North Sea at the Firth of Tay. It is renowned for its natural beauty, rich wildlife, and historic significance, the Tay is a vital waterway that has shaped the culture and communities of the people who live along its banks.

Canoeing the River Tay offers an exciting and rewarding adventure through some of Scotland’s most stunning and varied landscapes. Paddlers will navigate calm stretches, fast-moving currents, and thrilling rapids, making the journey both challenging and enjoyable. Along the way, participants will learn essential canoeing skills, including paddling techniques, steering, river safety and leadership, while working as part of a team to tackle the river’s changing conditions. Being self-sufficient and wild camping along the river will provides participants with the chance to experience the beauty of the Scottish countryside up close, with opportunities to spot local wildlife, explore peaceful riverbanks, and develop confidence and resilience through practical, hands-on learning on the water. During the expedition, participants will have the opportunity to complete the British Canoeing Awarding body (BCAB) – Canoe Award, recognising their skills development obtained during the expedition.
