Thirty-two passionate young people from across Wales took their first steps toward a career in nursing this Easter, as they participated in the RCN Prince of Wales Nursing Cadet Scheme—marking the final course held under its former title before the programme’s rebrand to the RCN King’s Nursing Cadet Scheme.
Held during the first week of the Easter holidays in Wrexham, the week-long Pan-Wales event brought together cadets from the three Welsh ACF counties and one CCF unit, for an inspiring introduction to the nursing profession. Participants gained hands-on insights into the world of healthcare through 20 hours of observational clinical experience, working alongside nursing staff and learning what it takes to care for people in need.
As part of the Wider Cadet Experience, in the Army Cadets, we not only deliver military-themed training such as Drill, Fieldcraft, and Navigation, but also offer a wide variety of additional skills and qualifications to support our Cadets’ development. One of the standout opportunities is the Nursing Cadet Scheme, which provides a unique pathway for those interested in a future in healthcare.
The recent event also marked a significant milestone for the programme, as it transitions to the RCN King’s Nursing Cadet Scheme, supported by His Majesty King Charles III, who is also the patron of the Royal College of Nursing. His Majesty has supported the RCN nursing cadet programme since its creation in 2019. To date, 1,156 young people have either completed or are currently undertaking the programme.
At a special event held at the RCN’s UK headquarters in London, the scheme was officially renamed from the Royal College of Nursing Prince of Wales Nursing Cadets to the Royal College of Nursing King’s Nursing Cadets, further demonstrating His Majesty’s continued and invaluable support. The event also celebrated the enrolment of the programme’s 1000th cadet, who had the distinct honour of meeting the King.
RCN General Secretary and Chief Executive Professor Nicola Ranger said:
“We are delighted to have been joined by His Majesty as we rename the cadet scheme and celebrate our wonderful cadets from across the UK. Nursing is an incredible career and the support of His Majesty has inspired young people to begin their journey working in health care. We look forward to building on the strength of the programme, with the continued support of His Majesty.”
A recent survey revealed that 56% of cadets or alumni who responded confirmed they have gone on to further education or now work in nursing or health-related fields—clear evidence of the programme’s lasting impact.
The programme, initially piloted in Wales, now runs at selected locations across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. It is open to young people aged 16 to 25, offering them 40 hours of teaching and learning alongside 20 hours of clinical observation in real healthcare environments. Delivered by RCN staff in partnership with youth organisations, education institutions, and health providers, the programme equips young people with vital skills, insights, and confidence to pursue a rewarding career in nursing.
If you’re passionate about helping others and curious about a future in healthcare, the RCN King’s Nursing Cadet Scheme might just be the perfect starting point.
