Training Across Every Level

Driffield Cadet Training Centre was a hive of activity last weekend. D Company welcomed 137 attendees, including 111 cadets, for a weekend packed with challenge, learning and achievement.

The weekend offered something for everyone. New recruits took their first steps in the Army Cadet Force, while experienced cadets developed specialist skills. Across the site, cadets gained confidence, embraced new experiences and worked towards nationally recognised qualifications. D Company’s dedicated team of adult volunteers supported them throughout.

Cadets on the Basic and 1 Star Cadres focused on the foundations of Army Cadet training. They practised drill, first aid, fieldcraft and teamwork. More experienced cadets completed 2 Star Communications and Information Systems (CIS) and 2 Star Expedition training. These activities helped them build practical skills for the next stage of their cadet journey.

Despite the summer heatwave, cadets and adult volunteers made the most of every training opportunity. They showed resilience, teamwork and determination throughout the weekend.

The Commandant and Deputy Commandant also visited the training centre. They met cadets and adult volunteers and saw first-hand the wide range of opportunities available across D Company.

Celebrating Success

The weekend also celebrated the achievements and dedication of both cadets and adult volunteers.

One cadet proudly received their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The award recognised the commitment and perseverance needed to complete the prestigious programme.

A Service Award also recognised an adult volunteer who has helped shape D Company over the past six years. They have served as Detachment Commander at two different detachments and played an important role in developing young people across the company. Their current detachment has flourished under their leadership and is now one of D Company’s largest. This reflects their commitment, enthusiasm and the welcoming environment they have created.

The Commandant also presented three Commandant’s Coins to adult volunteers whose contributions went above and beyond.

One recognised the exceptional work of the County CIS Officer. They undertook the enormous task of servicing a significant number of radios, ensuring communications equipment was ready for cadet training across the county.

The remaining two Commandant’s Coins recognised adult volunteers who showed outstanding professionalism, compassion and care during a recent medical emergency involving a cadet. Their actions left a lasting impression on the cadet’s family, who personally recommended them for recognition in appreciation of the reassurance and support they provided.

The Commandant also presented a Commissioning Scroll to mark another important milestone in the service of one of D Company’s adult volunteers.

Promotions and Looking Ahead

The weekend ended with several well-earned cadet promotions. One cadet earned promotion to Lance Corporal, while three Lance Corporals were promoted to Corporal. These promotions recognised the commitment, leadership and personal development shown both during training weekends and at local detachments.

Weekends like this show what the Army Cadet Force is all about. They help young people develop confidence, learn practical skills and build lifelong friendships. They also create opportunities that stay with cadets long after the weekend ends.

None of this would be possible without D Company’s dedicated adult volunteers. Their commitment helps inspire and support the next generation every week.

If you’re aged 12–17 and looking for your next adventure, or you’re an adult interested in volunteering, there’s a place for you at Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force.
