The cadets took part in the 51 (Scottish) Brigade Cadet Forces First Aid competition, held at Boddam Cadet Training Centre on Saturday 11 October.

The cadets tackled a range of demanding and realistic scenarios testing the cadets with realistic emergencies aided by dramatic casualty make-up.

Although the Battalion’s Team did not win overall, members of the team did win individual medals. Sergeant Instructor Scott Aitken (20), from Brae Detachment, received a Silver Medal in the Young Adult Competition.

Including SI Aitken who represented the Battalion in the Young Adult category, right cadets represented the Battalion in the Scottish competition: Cdt Alexander Marchant (13), from Brae Detachment, Cdt Cpl Madaleine MacLean (16), Cdt LCpl Marcin Wolanski (16), from Kirkwall Detachment, Cdt Sgt Stephen Laurenson (16), Cdt CSM Vaila Thompson (17), Cdt Sgt Evie Leslie (16), Cdt LCpl Kerryn Kane (15) and Laura Obiedzinska (14), from Lerwick Detachment.

Orkney & Shetland Battery Commander, Major Cheryl Haynes said “I’m very proud of all the cadets from Orkney & Shetland Battery, who entered the Brigade First Aid Competition. The two cadet teams, & especially the team leaders, did exceptionally well; bearing in mind that this was their first competition. They learned a great deal from the experience & found it very interesting talking with folk from other Battalions & from the Combined Cadet Force. Many thanks go to the organisers of the competition, and also to 2 Highlanders ACF for assisting with travel from Aberdeen Airport.”
