How to Keep Fit and Healthy

4 May 2018

It’s a fact that exercise is something we can do to keep a fit body and a healthy mind. As we age it’s important to know what to do to keep fit. You can learn how to maintain your health and fitness at home, but pursuing new hobbies is also a great idea. Read through our chosen five ways about how to stay fit and healthy, and you’ll find yourself reaping the benefits.

Take a Trip to The Doctors

Staying fit and healthy is simple, and it can all start from knowing how to source any health issues. Taking time out from your busy schedule to check in with your doctor can bring any existing health issues to light or give you the medical green card to kick-start your road to fitness. Knowing the facts about your body, such as your BMI (body mass index), can provide great motivation as you create certain goals to work towards.

Sleep, Sleep, Sleep!

Ensuring that you’re getting enough sleep can be one of the easiest, and most important ways to maintain health and fitness. If you have a lack of energy, you’re less likely to go for that run or cook a healthy meal.

A lack of sleep takes a massive toll on our mental health and can affect our memory, metabolism, stress hormones, immune system and cardiovascular system. Sleep is your body’s time to hit reset for being able to do day-to-day activities, so make sure you get enough of it.

Keep a Balanced Diet

What goes into your body plays a major role in how healthy you are. Eating habits are a part of your lifestyle that can shape your energy levels daily. We all have our favourite dishes, but it’s important to maintain balance in our diets. Adding various colours to your plate helps to create that balance - especially with fruit and vegetables. Experimenting with different meals doesn’t have to be hard, and it’s extremely satisfying knowing that the delicious meal you’ve cooked is great for your health too.

Challenge Yourself

The best way to keep fit is to challenge yourself mentally and physically; anything that you can already achieve comfortably will only maintain your existing level. Push yourself - explore new clubs to join, as well as your weekly Zumba class.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to stay active and keep fit, offering opportunities for adults from all walks of life to try something new. This can also be a great chance to expand your social circle and give back to the community.

Volunteering with us at The Army Cadet Force has many benefits. Develop your skillset and learn how to stay active whilst enjoying yourself and helping others. Trying something new in your spare time will provide mental benefits, as well as boost your physical activity.
