Playing sports is a fantastic way to stay fit and healthy, but when it comes to playing team sports the benefits can be even greater. With team sports, you can get all the benefits of learning a skill and friendly competition, but there are also social and community benefits from playing in a team. Let’s take a closer look at the importance of sports and teamwork.
Improves Physical Health
Improving your physical health is one of the biggest and most obvious benefits of competitive sports. Team sports often involve rigorous physical activity and training which will enhance your cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and endurance, and can help you maintain a healthy weight. Team sports help train your reflexes, too. You need to be able to react quickly to moments in the game from either team. Team sports also enhance hand-eye coordination, balance, and overall motor skills.
Builds Mental Health
It’s well known that physical activity can help with mental health. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can reduce anxiety and depression. When working as a team you also learn the value of friendship and teamwork. You can learn to be more confident as you train, play and win together, and develop your self-confidence, knowing you have a team to back you up and cheer you on.
A team is its own support network as you are all working together for the same goal. You will win or lose as a team, not as individuals; and you can learn to handle stress better. Team games can be demanding; you want to defeat the other team and not let down your own. It’s always a challenge, but one that you can learn to overcome.
Develops Critical Thinking
Other positive effects of team sports include strengthening your ‘thinking muscles’. Team games can be fast-moving environments with many moving parts. These sports can help you develop your situational awareness. Where are all the players? Where is the ball? What is likely to happen in the next five seconds? Keeping track of all these items helps develop greater perception.
You can also learn to problem solve too, and fast! The flow of a game can change quickly, so you need to think on your feet in order to react. Don’t forget the rules! You will have to work within the limitations of the game’s rules to win fairly, and problem-solving with limited options and time is a great way to learn creative thinking.
Teaches Strategy and Tactics
Knowing what to do and when is as important a skill as knowing how to do it and team sports are no different. When you are playing a single game, you only need to consider that one-off performance, but if you are part of a league, you need to take a longer-term view. In team sports, you can think of the game as an issue of tactics and the league or campaign as an issue of strategy.
On a tactical level, you need to know the actions your team must take to win the game. How will you score that goal? How can you defend against the next attack? What do you need to win and how hard do you need to push?
On a strategic level, you can learn to think more broadly, beyond the individual game. In a league, you can track the overall performance of all the teams and use that information to plan your games. Perhaps you have enough points that you don’t even need to win the next encounter to still do well. Is that an opportunity to rest your players, or give new players more experience with nothing at stake? A game may only take an hour, but a league may take months. Learning the difference between short-term and long-term thinking, and when to use each of them, is a very useful skill.
Strengthens Emotional Health
The emotional benefits of playing team sports are often understated because the physical benefits are very clear. Working as a team to achieve a goal against tough competition (even if it is not a sport) helps you develop other qualities. Understanding and compassion can be learned from team failures and fumbles.
Empathy helps you understand and support your team, but you can also learn to understand the mood of your opponent’s team so you can exploit it. These are important skills which will always help you build and support any team you are in.
Cultivates Social Benefits
Learning how to work as a team is the most obvious benefit. Teamwork in sports means learning collaboration, cooperation, and understanding how each individual supports the goal of the team. The striker in football might be the one to get the glory, but the victory belongs to the team, and they can’t win without one.
Communication in sports is constant and frantic so it can improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Becoming part of a team also creates new opportunities to form friendships that can last a lifetime.
Team sports build a community of players, so you become part of something bigger than yourself.
Encourages Fun!
Above all, team sports provide enjoyment, fun, and a break from your routine. It is fun to see your friends, compete win, and it can also be fun to lose. Getting fit and healthy, and learning skills like teamwork and communication are important. Team sports give you the chance to benefit from all these things while having fun. Remember the lessons, but enjoy the game.
