The award recognises three decades of exceptional service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to young people across Cornwall and the wider Southwest.

Speaking on the announcement of his MBE, Col Deakin said:

Receiving this award is a real honour. I am extremely proud to be a member of the Army Cadet Force and see so many young people achieve. I feel very humble that I have received this great honour. It means so much to my family and I.

An incredible Volunteer Career

Col Deakin began his Army Cadet Force journey in January 1996, joining from the Rifles Reserves with no previous cadet background, but the drive to give back to his local community.

Over the next 30 years, he progressed through many different roles within کارن وال ACF from taking command of Penryn Detachment for 5 years where he then took the plunge into a wider leadership position with 4 years as Company 2IC and then taking on the appointment of company commander in 2005.

Col Deakin went on to spend an incredible 8 years as the county training officer planning and preparing 8 annual camps for thousands of cadets across Cornwall. In 2015 Col Deakin promoted into the position of deputy commandant and then later as commandant in 2021 where he continues to drive Cornwall ACF forward to its current 478 cadets and 151 adult volunteers.

Beyond his formal roles, Col Deakin has shaped the cadet experience across the region. He chairs the Tri‑Service Cadet Units in Cornwall and previously led the county’s outreach programme, expanding opportunities for young people from diverse backgrounds to access cadet training, adventure, and personal development.

Commander South West, offered warm congratulations:

Paul’s leadership has transformed cadet opportunities across Cornwall. His passion, integrity, and commitment to young people embody the very best of the Cadet Forces. This recognition is richly deserved.

A Legacy Still Growing

Col Deakin’s influence extends far beyond organisational leadership. He is widely regarded as a mentor, a steady hand during challenging periods, and a champion for ensuring that every cadet—regardless of background—has the chance to thrive.

His MBE marks not the culmination of a career, but a milestone in a continuing mission to empower the next generation.
