Army Cadets in a Nutshell

We are a youth organisation open to anyone aged 12 to 18. Our mission is to build confidence in young people, helping them learn new skills and have fun in the process.

There’s no pressure to join the military; Army Cadets is just a really great way to meet people, try out adventurous activities, and take on new challenges in a friendly, supportive setting.

Anyone can join, and no experience is needed. You can find your local detachment on our website, fill out a quick form, and then attend a parade night with your child. The team there will walk you both through what to expect and help get them settled in.

Some Practical Information

Parade nights usually take place once or twice a week in the evenings. These sessions cover a wide range of topics, from first aid and fieldcraft to navigation, leadership, and drill, and give cadets the chance to earn recognised qualifications such as BTECs and Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.

Annual camps are week-long events, typically held during the summer holidays. They bring together cadets from across the area for more advanced training and exciting outdoor challenges like kayaking and abseiling. These camps also offer valuable opportunities for personal growth, teamwork, and independence.

We offer fun, challenging activities that help young people excel. Cadets take part in artesanato de campo, primeiros socorros, formação aventureira, and can work towards the Prémio Duque de Edimburgo. They also have access to leadership pathways at our national training centres for further development.

All events and activities are fully supervised by trained adult volunteers, with proteção and safety as top priorities. If you have any questions, your local detachment team is always happy to talk through what’s involved and how to support your child’s journey in the Army Cadets.
