Celebrating Exceptional Achievement at the Army Sports Awards
On 21 November 2025, Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major Jonathan Opoku Anokye was named Cadet Sportsperson of the Year at the Army Sports Awards. Held at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the event brought together the finest servicemen and women from across the Army to recognise outstanding sporting excellence, dedication, and leadership.
Cadet RSM Opoku Anokye’s journey is a story of talent, discipline, and unwavering drive. Joining the Cadetes do Exército do Condado Real de Berkshire in April 2021, he quickly distinguished himself as a cadet with exceptional potential. His commitment was evident from the outset as he embraced every opportunity to represent his county, region, and nation across a broad range of sports.
A Record of Sporting Excellence
Jonathan’s sporting achievements are remarkable in both scale and consistency. He has competed and medalled in football, rugby, athletics, orienteering, and cross country at county, regional, and national levels. Among his many accolades are national football titles, victories in the 200m and 400m athletics events, and podium finishes in national rugby championships. His ability to excel across multiple disciplines reflects not only natural athleticism but also a strong work ethic and commitment to continuous improvement.
In November 2024, he earned his Master Cadet qualification, a milestone reserved for those who display exceptional skill, judgement, and maturity. In July 2025, he was awarded the title of Campeão Cadete at Frimley Park, further demonstrating his leadership capabilities and dedication to personal development.
A Role Model for the Army Cadets
Alongside his sporting achievements, Jonathan’s leadership within the Army Cadets has been widely praised. He embodies the organisation’s core values of courage, discipline, and teamwork, serving as an inspiration to younger cadets and peers alike.
Brigadier McDade spoke proudly of Jonathan’s achievement, saying: “The Army Cadets are immensely proud of Cadet RSM Opoku Anokye. His dedication, humility, and outstanding sporting talent set a superb example for all our young people, and his success is richly deserved.”
A Night to Celebrate
General Sir Roly Walker, Chief of the General Staff, addressed attendees with a message about the importance of sport in building character, cohesion, and resilience within the Army. His remarks reinforced the significance of achievements like Jonathan’s and the collective commitment of those who support Army sport.
