Clwyd and Gwynedd Win Gold at the Cadet Cambrian Patrol Competition

Nineteen UK cadet teams tackled Brecon’s tough terrain in the 2026 Cambrian Patrol, mastering key military skills. Our team earned a Gold Medal, with RSM Maisie Roberts named Best Patrol Commander.

Nineteen teams of Army Cadets from across the UK descended on the demanding terrain of Brecon in South Wales, and the surrounding training areas, for the 2026 Cambrian Patrol Competition which challenges cadets to push themselves to the limit. Covering long distances across difficult ground, teams are tested through a series of military skill stands including casualty evacuation (CASEVAC), navigation, fieldcraft, and ammunition troop observation. The exercise is designed to develop resilience, leadership, teamwork, and military capability in young people — and our cadets rose to every challenge with professionalism and grit.

The team lead by Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major Maisie Roberts achieved one of the three Gold Medals awarded this year with Maisie being recognised as Best Patrol Commander — a testament to exceptional leadership, determination, and teamwork.

This year’s Cambrian Patrol was one of the toughest yet, with relentless weather making every kilometre of the 24km route even more challenging. Completing seven demanding stands in those conditions pushed the whole team physically and mentally, each one requiring a different set of skills and absolute focus.

Despite the conditions, Callum and the team pulled together, showing real determination, resilience, and teamwork—earning a gold medal and seeing their team leader awarded Best Section Commander, proving just how strong the group performed throughout the weekend.

As highlighted by teammate Harry Ashton, the patrol tested them in every possible way, from the harsh terrain to the unforgiving weather. But pushing each other forward, supporting the team, and staying committed made the achievement all the more meaningful. For Harry, taking part for the second time before finishing his cadet journey was an unforgettable experience—and one made even better by the team’s success.

A hard but incredibly rewarding weekend, and a testament to everyone’s dedication, leadership, and ability to thrive under pressure. For anyone who gets the opportunity to take part in the Cambrian Patrol—it’s absolutely worth it.

The Cadet Cambrian Patrol Competition was definitely challenging, but immensely rewarding. The team worked together incredibly well to utilise all of their training over their cadet career to complete stands involving first aid, CIS, navigation, problem solving, and fieldcraft skills, all during the 24km patrol around Sennybridge training area. We ended achieving a gold medal, along with only 2 other teams from the UK. I am personally incredibly proud to have achieved the award of the best patrol commander; however this wouldn’t have been possible without my team’s dedication, skills, and teamwork.
