Celebrating Achievement and Commitment
Recently, Cadet Laing represented the Battalion as a member of the successful team at Exercise STEM Challenge 2026.
Throughout the competition, the team demonstrated outstanding teamwork, determination and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, they embraced new challenges and showed what can be achieved through commitment, initiative and working together.
In addition to this achievement, receiving her Tam O’Shanter provides another opportunity to recognise Cadet Laing’s personal progress and development.

The Heritage and Significance of the Tam O’Shanter
The Tam O’Shanter is an instantly recognisable part of Scottish military dress. It also holds a special place within the traditions of the Black Watch.
However, it is much more than just a piece of uniform. The distinctive headwear represents a connection to Scotland’s military heritage, reflecting the history, identity and traditions associated with the Regiment.
Consequently, receiving a Tam O’Shanter is a significant moment for a cadet. It brings with it a sense of pride, respect and an appreciation of the history and responsibility that accompany wearing it.
