Suffolk ACF – AT Wales October 2025

In October 2025 40 cadets and 10 staff braved the highways to make the journey to Capel Curig in North Wales for the Annual Adventure Training expedition that Suffolk ACF organise every Easter and October. After a pleasant journey we arrived to fair weather and set about giving a brief to the cadets about what lay ahead for them.

DAY ONE

To start the trip off, sixteen cadets went walking with 8 on a navigation trip to the base of Tryfan and back to camp and 8 taking on the beautiful Moel Siabod on the wettest day we had in Wales. Both teams worked hard with expert navigation training being given by Lt Turner and AUO Timson, the other team being taken to the top of Moel Siabod by Captain Rhind and CSM Thomas. To say it was challenging would be an understatement but all reached the top and achieved the goal of working as a team and showing true grit and determination. The remaining 24 cadets were split into three teams and completed a round robin of Rock climbing, Raft building and Canoeing with our outdoor company Boulder Adventures who are based in Llanberis by the lake.

DAY TWO

The Boulder Adventure team had 16 on Gorge scrambling which is where the cadets walk up a stream taking on various challenges and jumps into pools along the way, and 8 did a combination of rock climbing oraz canoeing for the day. The walking team took 16 cadets up to the top of Snowdon by way of the Rhyd-Ddu path with some real digging deep from some of the cadets as this is a long and hard path but again all completed it and a great day was had by all.

DAY THREE

This was a long hard day for the walkers where we tackled the beautiful hill of Moel Ellio a hill that has a hard start and lots of false summits but eventually at the top a great ridge walk along and down into Llanberis. Once again all the cadets dug deep and finished it with a well-earned cuppa in Llanberis. The other groups completed a gorge walking session and canoeing and raft building combination with reports of fun and laughter throughout the day.

DAY FOUR

On the final day, there was a choice of activities for some of the cadets and the volunteers. The walkers chose the lovely hill outside camp Moel Siabod, a great day, dry and crisp and of course the obligatory trip at the end to the Siabod café was well deserved for all. The other group did Gorge scrambling and a combination of canoeing and abseiling for their activities which everyone enjoyed.

As always the cadets were a credit to Suffolk ACF with the camp staff all praising their manners and cheerfulness. I would also like to thank all the Adult staff who assist on these ventures twice a year and to Captain Jason Till who we use as our additional Mountain leader in the hills.

As always we couldn’t do anything without the backroom staff, planning (Maj Mason) and all the Permanent Staff for moving buses and sorting kit so a massive Thank you to you all.

Can I also Thank the Ulysses Trust for assisting in the funding of our trip and so allowing cadets of all levels to take part in this brilliant opportunity to push themselves further and to Strive to Achieve. We are deeply grateful to the Trust and our supporting partners. The impact of this expedition will last far beyond the week itself. Well done all!!
