Brothers Oliver (13) and William (14) Stacy were watching TV at their home in Oakham, Leicester when their father Mark while their mum (Victoria) was away with friends.
Mark went upstairs to use the bathroom and after a few minutes the boys heard a loud thump, followed by another. Both boys went to investigate and found their dad unconscious at the bottom of the stairs, after he reportedly had a seizure and fell.
William immediately checked his dad for a response, checked his vital signs and for any obvious injuries – after finding a pulse and signs of breathing, he put his dad into the recovery position.
After a while, Mark’s breathing became shallow, and his pulse weakened, at this point, William and Oliver knew something serious was happening. Oliver called 999 and started relaying his fathers’ information on the phone to the operator, who instructed the young boys to begin CPR immediately and assured them that help was on its way.
The boys turned their dad onto his back, Will started chest compressions while Oliver went to get help from their neighbours, Janice and John. After half an hour of CPR, Mark started to display signs of consciousness – Will monitored his father as he continued to open and close his eyes.
Around ten minutes after the 999 call, First Responders arrived at the house to continue Will’s lifesaving actions at the hospital and for further observations and treatment.
Although they were scared in the moment, the boys who demonstrated heroic levels of knowledge and skill were reunited with their mum the next day, and Mark was discharged from hospital.
