A Safe Space for All: The Army Cadets LGBTQ+ Network

Introducing Mike White 

Colonel Mike White is the Commandant of Northumbria Army Cadet Force (ACF) and the lead for the Army Cadets Diversity and Inclusion LGBTQ+ Network. His connection to the cadets spans nearly five decades, having first joined at the age of 13. 

What is the LGBTQ+ Network? 

The LGBTQ+ Network is one of several Diversity and Inclusion networks within the Army Cadets. Its core purpose is to share views, best practice and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community across the ACF. 

At its heart, the network is about creating a safe and welcoming space. As Mike explains, “To ensure they have a platform and a safe space to discuss local matters that impact their cadet journey.” 

What the Network Does 

The network runs a range of activities and initiatives throughout the year to support cadets and adult volunteers. These include three online discussion forums held annually, a dedicated LGBTQ+ WhatsApp group, attendance at the Army’s LGBTQ+ conference, and coordination of National and Local Pride events. 

One milestone Mike is particularly proud of is the recognition of the ਲੰਡਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਈਡ event as a nationally supported occasion. “The main Pride event in London was not centrally funded and not a recognised National event,” he says. “It is now, and every part of the country will have the opportunity to join our London sectors in the event.” 

Supporting the Community 

The network is committed to supporting members through challenges as well as celebrations. Mike is clear that the focus is on acceptance rather than distinction: “The issues are predominantly around understanding and not being anything special. Our community just want to be accepted as cadets and adult volunteers. We don’t need a badge or pronoun. We are just members of our amazing ACF.” 

A Moment That Stands Out 

For Mike, one of the most meaningful moments came from leading the London Pride event for the first time. “Seeing the sense of pride on our young people’s faces, many of whom had never been to the capital let alone attended a Pride parade, was extremely rewarding and worth every bit of effort.” 

The support offered by the network made a tangible difference to those involved. As Mike puts it: “It provided them with a ‘we care, we are there for you, and you are not alone’.” 

How Networks Like This Make a Difference 

Mike believes the network’s very existence sends a powerful message to cadets and adult volunteers. “By being there, knowing where to get answers, having a place at the table,” he says, the network helps create a more inclusive environment across the Army Cadets.
