Shape Futures While Building Your Own

As an adult volunteer in the Army Cadets, you will have the opportunity to learn about, take part in, and organise an enormous range of activities.

During their time in the Army Cadets, cadets work through the ਆਰਮੀ ਕੈਡੇਟ ਸਿਲੇਬਸ (ACS) which has five progressive levels of difficulty and covers a broad range of topics, including:

As an adult volunteer, you will be helping guide cadets through the syllabus to the best of each individual’s abilities. If that sounds daunting, don’t panic! You will be part of a team of people who all have different skills, qualifications, and experience.

As an adult volunteer with Army Cadets, you’ll play a vital role in shaping the future of young cadets, but don’t worry – no prior military or cadet experience is required. What is expected of you, however, is a commitment to supporting cadets, being a positive role model, and continuously developing your skills.

Volunteering with Army Cadets requires dedication and time, as you’ll be helping to lead activities, train cadets, and support their personal growth. Flexibility is important, as your involvement will include evenings, normally 1 or 2 per week and occasional weekend commitments, averaging once every few months after training.

In return for your commitment, you’ll receive full training and ongoing support. You’ll also have opportunities to take on leadership roles and specialise in areas that interest you, all while contributing to the personal development of the next generation.

When you apply to join the Army Cadets as an adult volunteer, you will be asked to attend a Familiarisation (FAM) event alongside other prospective volunteers. If successful, and should you choose to continue your journey, you will be appointed as either a Probationary Instructor (PI) or Non-Uniformed Volunteer (NUV), depending on which pathway you choose.

After the FAM event, you will undertake your Safe Person Training and Assessment weekend, this is the minimum requirement of training for any volunteer in our organisation. On completion of this, you will either be appointed as a Sergeant (Sgt) or remain a Non-Uniformed Volunteer (NUV). At this stage, you will be able to attend your local unit and start supporting the local cadets.

If you choose to continue down the instructional pathway, you will start your Basic Instructor Training. This will be a mixture of evening, day and weekend training. Most volunteers complete the programme within 12 months, although your progress will depend on your abilities and the time you can commit. Throughout your training, you’ll be working alongside other volunteers, gaining new skills while receiving support from the existing instructors.

After completing the package, you may choose to develop your leadership and management skills to become an officer. You might also want to pursue additional training in specialist areas. Training in the Army Cadets is either free or heavily subsidised, and many of our adult volunteer activities and training courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications which can improve career prospects in your life outside of the cadets.

Becoming an adult volunteer with the Army Cadets not only allows you to guide and mentor young cadets but also provides personal growth opportunities. You can develop new skills, earn nationally recognised qualifications, and take part in unique experiences that benefit both your career and your personal life. Plus, you’ll be part of a supportive community and make a lasting impact on the lives of young people.
