A huge well done to the Kent ACF Corps of Drums, who recently represented the County with pride and professionalism at the Swale Police Community Day. Their performance was a fantastic example of the musical talent, discipline and commitment that continues to grow within Kent ACF.

Revitalising Music in Kent ACF

Kent ACF relaunched its Corps of Drums in 2023, re-establishing an important and historic element of Army Cadet Force culture. Since then, the Corps of Drums has been steadily developing, providing cadets with opportunities to build musical skills alongside their core cadet training.

In line with regular and reserve Army practice, members of a Corps of Drums are not solely musicians-they are soldiers first. Typically, in front-line units, Corps of Drums personnel serve within specialist roles such as heavy weapons platoons, while also supporting ceremonial duties. This same ethos is reflected within Kent ACF: our cadets continue to develop through the green syllabus while dedicating additional time to learning the specialist skills associated with Army music.

Progress and Commitment

Recent engagements have included community performances, Remembrance Day parades, and commemorations such as the 85th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Hood. These occasions provide cadets with valuable real-world experience, reinforcing confidence, teamwork and pride in their achievements.

Looking ahead, there are further opportunities for suitably trained cadets to take part in prestigious national events, including performances at Horse Guards Parade and Edinburgh Castle. These experiences offer an exceptional platform for personal development and represent the high standards cadets can achieve through dedication and training.

Supporting Events Across Kent ACF

The Corps of Drums is keen to expand its contribution across the County and is exploring how best to support events at County, Company and Detachment level. Increasing participation at local events will not only enhance the profile of Kent ACF, but also allow cadets to gain more performance experience, building confidence and competence.
If you are organising an event and would like support from the Corps of Drums, requests can be submitted to Sgt Guy Holland or to Colour Sergeant Dan Simson, County Music Officer. The team will do their best to accommodate and support your event where possible.

Get Involved in Music

The Corps of Drums is open to both cadets and adult volunteers interested in learning a musical instrument and becoming part of the team. Training opportunities are available throughout the year, including:

Monthly training days

Two week-long national music camps

While the primary focus is on drums, flutes and bugles, there are also opportunities at national music camps to learn additional instruments.
Participation in the Corps of Drums offers a wide range of benefits. These include improved drill, enhanced self-confidence, and the ability to contribute towards qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. It also provides a unique and rewarding way to engage with the wider cadet experience.

Outreach and Future Development

The Corps of Drums team is keen to promote its activities and welcomes opportunities to engage with units across the County. Members are available to attend Company weekends to deliver introductory sessions, demonstrations, or background activities. There are also plans to provide taster sessions at Annual Camp this year, particularly for cadets interested in attending the next national music camp in October.

The Kent ACF Corps of Drums continues to go from strength to strength, demonstrating what can be achieved through commitment, teamwork and a shared passion for music and cadet life.
