A Standout Achievement at Cadet Training Centre Frimley Park

Cadet Sergeant Major Julia Rusniak from Lothian and Borders Battalion Army Cadets, Scotland, has been recognised as the top student on Master Cadet Course 26/01. This prestigious achievement reflects not only exceptional performance throughout the course, but also resilience, leadership and a commitment to personal development.

Le Cours de maître cadet represents the pinnacle of training within the Army Cadets, challenging cadets to demonstrate advanced leadership, artisanat de terrain and instructional ability. Rising to the top of such a demanding course is a testament to Cadet Sergeant Major Rusniak’s determination and growth.

The Commanding Officer, Lt Col Robert Elms of Centre de formation des cadets Frimley Park, marking his first parade since assuming the role late last year, commended the achievements of all cadets who participated in the final parade: “Today marks your successful completion of the Master Cadet course. You have been tested physically and mentally, and you have shown the determination and commitment expected of you. Above all, this has been a leadership course. You have demonstrated excellent leadership – the leadership expected of a Master Cadet. The skills you have shown and developed will serve you well in the future. Today, you leave here having earned the title of Master Cadet. Be proud!”

From New Recruit to Top Student: Rusniak’s Cadet Journey

Julia’s journey into the cadets began unexpectedly. “I had absolutely no idea what the cadets even were,” she said. “A friend encouraged me to join because her older brother was in cadets. It has led me to so many amazing things and I’m so thankful for it.”

When asked about the toughest challenge she faced during the course, she highlighted the importance of perseverance. “I think the toughest part is just to keep going. Whatever they throw your way, just keep pushing through it and keep reaching for that next step, because you can do it.”

Reflecting on her early days, Julia recognises how much she has grown in confidence. “If I could go back to my first day as a cadet, I would tell myself to be more confident. I was really shy. If I had that confidence back then, I think I would have done even more.”

Leadership, Confidence and Looking Ahead

That confidence is now a defining strength, both within and beyond cadets. She has applied her leadership skills at school, supporting younger students, and through volunteering in her community. “I use the confidence I’ve built as a leader in my school. I help lead younger years, and when I volunteer, I’m more willing to step forward and help.”

A defining moment on the Master Cadet course came during fieldcraft training. “The first section attack I led as IC was when it all clicked. I realised, I’m here and I’ve got this.”

Julia believes strong leadership comes from experience. “It’s about getting as much experience as possible. It’s best to lead from experience. Now I’ve completed Master Cadet, I can go back and help the next person in line.”

She credits much of her success to those around her. “Outside of cadets, my parents inspire me. They always tell me to never give up and keep striving. In cadets, it’s my Detachment Commander, Lieutenant McCauley. She’s always there encouraging me every step of the way.”

Looking ahead, Julia is focused on her next steps. “I’m currently working towards university, and I’m hoping to possibly become an adult volunteer in the future to give back and help others in cadets.”

Cadet Sergeant Major Rusniak’s achievement as top student highlights not only her individual dedication, but also the opportunities the cadet experience provides to develop confidence, leadership and a strong sense of purpose.
