Prior to attend the MT Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) training course, candidates must meet the following prerequisites:
- Be at least 17 years old at the time of registration (18 to attend the assessment).
- Be a member of a Mountaineering Council—such as the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), Mountaineering Scotland, or Mountaineering Ireland.
- Register with Mountain Training for the Climbing Wall Instructor scheme prior to attending the training.
- Have a minimum of 15 indoor climbing sessions logged, at least in three different climbing walls, and led at least one climbing session.
- Be an experienced indoor climber, comfortable with both bottom rope and bouldering activities.

- You must have led a minimum of 40 climbs, graded French 4a or higher on a variety of climbing walls.
- Must have assisted with the delivery of at least 15 supervised group sessions with 5 reflective reports recorded on DLOG.
- Hold a valid first aid certificate, typically a one-day (8-hour) course that covers basic life support and incident management.
These requirements ensure candidates are well-prepared and have sufficient practical experience to be assessed on their competence as a Climbing Wall Instructor.
