The weekend of 20-21st September marked the start of our second NHS Cadet cohort. This weekend was the beginning of three intensive training sessions designed to introduce cadets to the world of healthcare and NHS careers. Throughout the program, participants engage in hands-on learning experiences.  Allowing them to develop core NHS skills, while building confidence and forging new friendships with their fellow cadets.

Special Guests Make Lasting Impressions

The launch weekend featured several inspiring guest speakers who shared their passion for healthcare and community service. Steve, Chairman of South West Blood Bikes, demonstrated the vital role volunteers play in supporting emergency medical services. Nicky from NHS Talkworks provided insights into mental health support services, while Martin and Jan from Therapy Dogs Nationwide brought a unique perspective on healthcare support and along with their therapy dogs Santos and Loki, proved to be popular visitors with the cadets.

Cadets Share Their Enthusiasm

The impact of the program was evident in the cadets’ responses. Cadet Katelyn Mitchell, 15, from Ivybridge detachment said: “I enjoyed the visitors specifically because it was nice to have different people come in and speak to us. It was inspiring to see the therapy dogs charity because we could see how much it meant to them and the people they support and how hard they’ve worked.”

Cadet Bobbie Rawlings, 14, from Newton Abbot, D Company, expressed her excitement about the learning opportunities: “I’ve learnt lots of new information about different careers, and unlocked many useful skills. I can’t wait to carry on with the course. It was incredible.”
