Cadet Corporal Marley Elvery

The highlight of the Centrum szkolenia kadetów w zakresie przygód (CCAT) climbing course in Wales was summiting the first mountain, Glyder Fawr, as well as visiting a café on the final day, which was a great way to round off the experience.

The toughest moment came when the weather turned extremely foggy and visibility dropped to only a few metres. We had to rely entirely on pacings and bearings to navigate, which proved both challenging and rewarding.

One of the most memorable aspects of the course was sleeping in an abandoned quarry. It was fascinating to explore a place where people once worked many years ago, adding a unique sense of history to the experience.

A key mountain skill I learnt was the importance of taking your time and moving carefully to avoid injury, especially in an environment where help is not immediately accessible and an ambulance cannot simply reach you.

At the start of the course, I felt very nervous because of my fear of heights. However, by the end, I had completely overcome that fear and now feel confident when working at height.

The other cadets on the course were fantastic, with everyone getting along very well throughout, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The instructors were also excellent, providing strong support through challenges and ensuring safety at all times.

Following this experience, I have already signed up for a CCAT caving trip. I would highly recommend the Army Cadets to other young people, as it helps build confidence, develop valuable outdoor skills, and encourages a greater appreciation for the environment and those around us. While people often associate cadets with marching, I would say there is actually a wide range of activities available, and CCAT is one of the most enjoyable options.

The Centrum szkolenia kadetów w zakresie przygód (CCAT) delivers Adventurous Training qualifications and skill-based experience courses for Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) and cadets aged 15+ from the Army Cadets.

They offer a wide range of challenging, inspiring, and progressive courses, all safely managed, at levels ranging from Basic to Intermediate skills, up to Leader and Instructor qualifications. These courses follow the Army Cadets Adventurous Training (ACAT) and National Governing Body (NGB) accredited schemes.

They offer CFAVs a clear pathway to earn National Governing Body (NGB) accredited qualifications in adventurous activities, including:

  • Lider Lowland
  • Lider chodzenia po górach
  • Lider alpinizmu
  • Instruktor wspinaczki skałkowej (wewnątrz i na zewnątrz)
  • Lider rowerów górskich
