Training Isn’t Just for Cadets: Erin Takes the Driver’s Seat

Getting cadets out and about across North Wales and beyond takes more than enthusiasm — it takes qualified drivers!

With growing demand for minibus drivers to transport cadets to camps, activities and events, having suitably qualified adult volunteers is essential to keeping Clwyd & Gwynedd Army Cadets on the move. Where specialist driving qualifications are required, dedicated instruction and testing are vital.

Erin Marsland from Mold Detachment recently rose to the challenge, successfully completing the MOD minibus driver course at the Defence School of Transport in Leconfield.

Her journey began with preparation and determination. Erin took a day away from summer camp to sit her theory test at Minley Barracks, working through a wide range of questions before passing first time!

Knowing that a minibus would feel considerably larger than her usual car, Erin also gained experience driving a large van before attending the course — a move that proved invaluable.

Although getting behind the wheel initially felt daunting, the practical sessions at Leconfield helped Erin build confidence and develop her driving skills. With the support of the training team, she soon became comfortable handling the larger vehicle and successfully passed her test.

Reflecting on her achievement, Erin said:

“Obtaining my minibus licence through the MOD was a great opportunity to develop my personal driving skills, and gain a qualification to help support the cadets.

“I’m proud to have passed my minibus test and am grateful for the opportunity to do this through the ACF. I look forward to using this to further support the cadets.”

Erin’s achievement highlights the opportunities available to adult volunteers within the Army Cadets. Alongside supporting young people, volunteers can develop their own skills, gain recognised qualifications and take on new challenges.

Qualified drivers play a vital role in ensuring cadets can access the camps, competitions and adventures that make life in the ACF so rewarding. By helping get cadets safely to where they need to be, Erin will be making a real difference to the opportunities available to young people across the county.

Congratulations to Erin on passing her test! In Clwyd & Gwynedd Army Cadets, the opportunities to learn, develop and achieve are not just for cadets — they’re for our adult volunteers too.
