STEM Challenge Camp 2019

10 July 2019

  • National

Now in its fourth year, the camp focusses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths; subjects that are at the core of the cadet experience.

So from the minute our cadets arrive, they can expect interesting presentations and exciting opportunities to get hands-on experience. All this delivered by the Army’s leading STEM experts.

STEM out in the field

This year Army Medical Services will be taking the lead on the planning and delivery of the camp. Supported by the following Army units.

  • Army Air Corps (AAC) - discussing rotary wing (helicopter) flight.
  • Adjutant General Corps (AGC) - provide teachers, lawyers and accountants to the Army and will demonstrate how it uses high-tech forensic techniques to solve cases.
  • Army Medical Services (AMS) - includes medics, vets, dentists and nurses, who will be on hand to demonstrate how the army looks after its personnel and animals.
  • Royal Artillery (RA) - talking about the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) for battlefield surveillance and information gathering, along with a practical session operating drones.
  • Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) - showing how modern equipment is recovered and repaired.
  • Royal Logistics Corps (RLC) - showing how the Army is sustained in the field, including munitions, fuels and an explosives demonstration.
  • Royal Signals (RS)- demonstrating a range of state-of-the-art miltary communications equipment and the latest cybersecurity initiatives.

The camp is a great opportunity for cadets to speak to officers and soldiers in the Army about how STEM is integrated in their roles, as well as get a look at some of the kit and equipment they use every day.

If you're a cadet, or the parent/guardian of a cadet interested in attending, checkout our eligibility criteria.

Cadets need to:

  • Be in years 9, 10 or 11 at school (or a national equivalent) at the time of the STEM Challenge Camp in October 2019.
  • Be aged between 12 and 16.
  • Have attended at least one residential weekend with your contingent or county.
  • Not have attended any of the previous STEM camps.

Bookings are now closed for STEM Challenge Camp 2019. However, speak to your Detachment Commander if you are interested in attending in 2020

We’re really keen to hear from any CFAVs who can come along too. Whether that’s in an administrative or support role, or, if you’re a suitably qualified and experienced volunteer, as part of the presentation team.
