22 March 2013
Several hundred young ACF cadets gathered at Warcop on 16th March 2013 for the annual cadet football and cross country tournaments. Organised by Cumbria and Lancashire ACFs both competitions were a resounding success. Of course the weather helped – a terrible forecast of snow and rain proved wonderfully inaccurate and the overcast skies turned into sunshine as the day wore on. It was a remarkably injury free event (in the past we have even resorted to the helicopter ambulance as the Cumbria NHS fleet of ambulances was overwhelmed) and whilst the Eastern Region did scoop many of the prizes, there was a good cross section of other regions in the individual placings and team placings. North West was beaten into overall second place by only 35 points but Eastern region’s strength in depth again saw them winning. Prizes were presented by Col Gerry Wells-Cole who was nearing the end of his 50-year career in the military as he hands over as Chief Executive RFCA North West in April.
Meanwhile the Boys’ football progressed to the semis and finals on slightly truncated pitches and whilst London didn’t feature at all in the Cross Country they progressed to the finals in both the Juniors and Seniors, and then won both convincingly – no need for penalty shoot-outs this year thank goodness.
Prizes were presented by Maj Gen Malcolm Wood, Chairman ACFA.
The organisers’ thanks go to both Counties for their support to the event and to the adults from across the whole of UK who escorted the cadets to and from Warcop. I hope all went away having enjoyed the weekend.
