The ‘Enterprise for Life’ pilot programme was run, in March 2019, by X-Forces Enterprise (XFE), an organisation that supports enterprise among the military community. It will provide the blueprint for further courses for cadets – planned for autumn this year in the South East of England and early 2020 in the North West of England.

The first course saw 17 ACF cadets, aged 16-18, travelling to Greenwich, South London, for two days of briefings and workshops. The course offered an insight into business and, through a variety of collaborative tasks, inspired entrepreneurial thinking. The cadets, who had travelled from Army Cadet units around the UK, also presented their business ideas in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ style pitch. The course was funded by XFE with accommodation provided by the ACF.

Ren Kapur, the founder and chief executive of XFE who is also a Lt Col in the Reserve Forces, said: “Enterprise skills are not just necessary for starting your own business, but for helping you to understand commerce in general. We’re not trying to say ‘go and be an entrepreneur’ – but these skills are essential in the modern society where one job is never for life. We certainly saw the entrepreneurial spark ignite in many of the cadets that weekend.

“What was even more interesting was that each of the cadets’ enterprise ideas had a societal impact they were trying to address, whilst providing a product or service to the consumer; reflecting how the new generation of talent is not just focused on money and growth but success is also defined by ethics.”

Look out for more information on future courses on the ACF website and social media.
