Huge congratulations from the ACF to a recent adult volunteer, Acting Col Christopher Hugh Sharwood-Smith, and to Cadet Colour Sergeant Jeremiah Oluwatosin Ayotunde Emmanuel who have both been been granted state honours by Her Majesty The Queen in the annual New Year Honours List.
Acting Col Christopher Hugh Sharwood-Smith was awarded an MBE for his services to the ACF. Chris served the ACF for many years - he joined in 1986 and was commissioned in 1987 and acted as Commandant at Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire ACF from 2011-16. He continues to serve the ACF in his current role as Colonel Cadets for 7th Infantry Brigade.
In a rare tribute to a young person, 17-year-old Jeremiah Emmanuel was awarded a BEM (British Empire Medal) for services to Young People and the community in London. Jeremiah Emmanuel is a great role model to other cadets and he is also the founder of social justice charity One Big Community (1BC) which helps youth organisations to engage with decision-makers.
Talking about the award in an article on the BBC news website, Jeremiah said: "I think it's so important for young people to have a voice. We are the future and I think a lot of people forget that sometimes, especially when it comes to working on the things that affect us from politics [in] our everyday lives. So hopefully a 17-year-old receiving a Queen's honour can be an inspiration to other young people to wake up and say, 'Today I can bring a change in my community.'"
Jeremiah also paid tribute to the Army Cadets and his ACF first aid training. Having helped save the life of a young man who was attacked with a knife in his area late at night, he is now running a campaign to have first aid taught in all secondary schools in England. Jeremiah credits the ACF with giving him the first aid skills which helped him treat the victim until the ambulance arrived and he is now working together with the victim to develop a first aid lessons campaign. "These are really really important skills that young people should learn," he said.
The full list of awards is now available along with details on how to nominate people for the 2018 New Year Honours list.
