Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force\u2019s recent success in numbers of cadets has necessitated the creation of a new Company, No.4 (Octavia) Company. Whilst No.4 Company previously existed, it was not a full company and comprised only the Corps of Drums and Cambridge Regional College (CRC). In August last year, it became a fully fledged company, with a new name, commander and colours. It was named after Octavia Hill, the creator of the first Independent Army Cadet Battalion, who came from Wisbech. All its Detachments have transferred from other Companies. They are: March, Chatteris, Ely, Haddenham, Wisbech, and Cambridge Regional College.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here are some profiles of its senior adult staff.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4 Coy\u2019s Officer Commanding is Major Brendan Molloy. Starting as a cadet himself, he served in the Army Reserve for 30 years with the Royal Corps of Transport and the Royal Logistics Corps. His military experience took him to Iraq as part of Op Telic in 2005, where he was Air Transport Liaison Officer at Basra. He finished his Army Service with the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1. Aside from the military, he has worked in management, heavy goods delivery and as a BT engineer. Major Molloy joined us in 2010, becoming DC of Comberton and then Cambourne. He was Training Officer and then Staff Officer for No.2 Coy, Assistant County Training Officer and County Training Officer, Adult Training Officer, Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s Award Officer and County Shooting Officer.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI want to give the DCs a great deal of freedom, especially at Basic and One Star Level training, to make training fun. I want the detachments talking to each other, to join up as 4 Coy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lieutenant Phil Barrett is the Coy Staff Officer, the Second in Command of the Company. As Coy Staff Officer, he looks after admin and finance, governance and staffing issues as well as deputising for Major Molloy. He joined the ACF in 2017, starting as an instructor at Swavesey. He became a Commissioned Officer in 2021, and served as Detachment Commander of Swavesey and St Ives. He has worked as a Civil Servant for twenty years. He said; \u201cI was really pleased to join No 4 Coy as Staff Officer, as it was time for me to move on and try something different, to learn new things and take on new challenges. We have a great team with a good mix of experience, and so far, things are going very well. We need to establish a new Coy structure and make sure that the correct processes are embedded to ensure we are delivering what the cadets need.\u201d<\/p>\n

2Lt Nathan Drummond is the Coy Training Officer (TO), overseeing all the cadets training. Joining us as a 12 year old cadet in 2010, 2Lt Drummond has achieved a great deal in the last fifteen years. As a cadet, he was promoted all the way to Coy Sgt Major, and as an adult continued his impressive run of promotions, holding all the Non-Commissioned ranks up to, and including Sergeant Major, and becoming a Commissioned Officer last year. He completed the KGVI leadership course and a Level 3 in Leadership and Management, assisted with adult training and served as Detachment Commander at Soham, Cambridge, Burwell and Newmarket. Nathan also works as our Admin Officer and is a Police Special Constable. As Coy Training Officer, he will help Detachments to implement the training process and adhere to the training syllabus, ensure cadet promotions are happening as they should and help with the efficient running of training camps. He said: \u201cI always thought it would be interesting to be a TO, and good to get some broader experience working with different people. We want to make 4 Coy grow as much as possible, and ensure cadets and adults are getting the best experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

SMI Sarah McConnell is the Coy Sergeant Major, a role which encompasses welfare, behaviour and discipline issues for adults and cadets. She started as a cadet at Walton in 1996, additionally joined the Corps of Drums, became a Lord Lieutenant\u2019s Cadet and took part in trips to Belgium and Gibraltar. She said: \u201cAs a cadet, I learned teamwork, mixing with a variety of people, and never giving up on what you want.\u201d As soon as she reached the age of 18, she rejoined as an adult instructor. She became Detachment Commander at various 3 Coy Detachments, then temporary County Training Sergeant Major. She qualified in Skill at Arms and as an Exercise Conducting Officer, before joining No4 Coy in its previous form, 4 years ago as Coy Sgt Major. She took a Level 3 Teaching Course through the ACF, which was offered to CFAVs by Cambridge Regional College, going on to become an English Teacher. Because of this, she says: \u201cthe ACF completely changed my life\u201d. Of No4 Coy, she says: Our first Coy weekend camp was very successful, and everyone is looking forward to the next one, and to Annual Camp. We are lucky to have amazing colleagues, detachment staff, and permanent staff, they are all brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n
