  • SUFFOLK CADETS IN REMEMBRANCE OF NORMANDY DDAY LANDINGS 75 YEARS ON

    7 June 2019

55 Army Cadets and Adult instructors from Suffolk Army Cadet Force, accompanied by serving soldier from Woodbridge Royal Engineers acting as outlet Battlefield Tour Guide, travelled to Normandy, France to celebrate and commemorate the DDay Beach landings 75 years after it happened. The Normandy DDay beach invasion was the worlds largest invasion in history and help secure the victory for the allies during the Second World War. Suffolk Cadets were a contributors to the 2000 Army Cadets and Adult Instructors who have taken part in the Nationally organised trip over the last 7 days. Amongst their presence, the cadets had guided tours in the landing beaches, the American objectives including Omaha beach and Point de Hoc, before proceeding to cover the British and Allies events at The infamous Pegasus Bridge, Gold Beach, Mulberry B harbour and Bayeux Cemetery. The event finished with a drum head service, overlooking the town of Arromanche, which homes the Mulberry B Harbour. Cadets spent time focusing on the Suffolk Regiment involvement in the landings. After landing at Gold Beach, the sights were set in land towards Caen, capturing Hillman, a large German battery. Cadet Sergeant Guinavin said: ‘Attending the event was important for celebrating the success but also remembering those who fell for our freedom and never made it home. It’s up to our generations now to keep this memory alive’ The initiative was supported and controlled by Wiltshire ACF and all Army cadet units were invited to attend. Along with experience cadets could see the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) and how it was applied during the Second World War. Commandant Suffolk Army Cadet Force, Colonel Andy Smith said: “As Commandant of Suffolk Army Cadet Force I am very proud that Cadets from across Suffolk have been able to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day by joining Army Cadets from around the country on an informative battlefield experience and commemorative event. The visit included a tour of six carefully selected stands accompanied by an expert guide and included curriculum coordinated themes which included STEM, media, medicine and logistics. This was without a doubt a fantastic opportunity for all who took part and a thanks must be given to all of the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers who planned and supported with this very special experience” Talks are already in place for future trips that may include, The Dunkirk Evacuation, Victory in the Far East and other significant historical events.
