Horse and pony events with Somerset Army Cadets

Who would have thought that you could compete in horse riding events in the Army Cadets? Events last year have shown that not only it is possible but that is also possible to succeed from the outset.

In May 2018 Cadets Ted and Will Field from Ilminster Platoon and Cadet Molly Rucklidge from Doniford competed at The Royal Windsor Horse Show. The competition is open to all military and emergency services and is massively popular on a worldwide basis, being attended by Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

Somerset’s ‘dream team’ flew around a big course of show jumps to secure 10th place out of 28 teams. They went out and showed the regular units what Army Cadets are all about, despite being a Rifles-badged, rather than a cavalry affiliated county. In this case fun, team work, hard work, courage and determination paid great dividends.

In October Cadet Chloe Allen from Bishops Hull braved a storm to compete in the annual Army Royal Artillery Hunter Trial at Larkhill and had a successful day despite the rain.

What’s next?

Somerset Army Cadets will compete in South West events during 2019 in order to raise the profile, publicity and recruiting of the county with 2Lt Kara Zalewska picking up the reins to become Chef d’Equipe for the Battalion.

2Lt Chris Skelton (Normandy Company) and SSI Richard Taylor (Salamanca Company) will be forming the training team and are keen to get started. 2Lt Zalewska has many years of riding experience as she was an international show jumping groom, has her BHS PTT, is a reserve rider for the Mounted Police and competes herself in most disciplines on a regular basis.

2Lt Skelton has also been there and done it as a regular soldier in the Household Cavalry. He has teaching experience and lots of contacts and is busy planning a visit to the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) next year.

SSI Taylor has lots of show jumping experience and competed in his earlier years to a high level.

This year we plan to enter the following events:

UK Armed Forces Equestrian Championships (AFEC) - 27th-28th April

Addington Manor Equestrian Centre, Buckinghamshire

Dressage and Show jumping individual and teams.

Show jumping

Height-60cm-115m

Dressage all levels.

CHI Royal Windsor Horse Show - 11th May 2019

Windsor Castle grounds, Windsor, Berkshire

Height-105cm Show Jumping with three riders in a team.

Somerset Army Cadets will compete in the 2019 CHI Royal Windsor Horse Show in front of HM the Queen and aim to be in the top 10, in order to raise the profile and publicity of the Army Cadets nationally.

Larkhill Hunter Trials - 12th October 2019

Various heights, team,pairs and individual.

Unfortunately we can only enter one team (three riders) for Windsor.

If we have too many interested we intend to run a trial/qualifier at Addington to select the team.

We have the potential to have an astonishing year ahead of us, but to be able to compete you need your own horse or pony (or use of one), suitable transport and willing parents/guardians. You will also require your own horse third party insurance.

If you are interested or have any questions please have a word with your Platoon Commander who will forward your details.
