Army Proficiency Certificate

Discover the huge range of qualifications that you can gain as a cadet in Somerset with the APC Syllabus

During your time in the Army Cadets you will follow a syllabus called the Army Proficiency Certificate (APC) which becomes more challenging each year. As you learn more about each topic and get better at it, you go up through the star levels until you reach four star or even Master Cadet. Subjects that you learn include the following:

Cadet and the Community

Cadet Ranks

Drill and Turnout

Expeditions

Fieldcraft

First Aid

Military Knowledge

Music

Junior Cadet Instructor Cadre (JCIC)

Navigation

Senior Cadet Instructor Cadre (SCIC)

Skill At Arms

Shooting

Signals

Sport

As well as the APC topics, you also get the chance to have a go at a wide range of exciting adventurous training activities (including kayaking, abseiling, climbing, caving, skiing and mountain biking, plus loads more) and you can also do The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Somerset runs expeditions that can be anything from a few nights camping in the Lake District to an intrepid canoe trek through the loughs of northern Ireland – plus everything else in between. There are also international cadet exchanges and field trips to European battlefields. If you’re sporty then there are heaps of competitions for you. You’d start by competing against other cadets in your local area, but if you’re good you could end up representing Somerset in national Army Cadets sports competitions. There are even a few opportunities to travel overseas and represent Great Britain in sports like shooting. For those with an interest in music Somerset's Silver Bugles Band is one of the top bands in the country.

Furthermore, if you have an interest in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - we regularly send cadets on the Army's heavily subscribed and highly popular STEM course in mid-October
