Heston's Army Cadets lend a hand at Harlington Owl rescue.

Army Cadets from 192 Heston Detachment (Army Air Corps) have spent the last four weekends clearing, refurbishing and building a suitable home for Heathrow’s Owl Rescue sanctuary in Harlington. The facility was very much in need of repair and extension.

When Cadet Leader Staff Sergeant Priscilla Ledlie met the sanctuary owner Terry Travis and heard of their plight, she immediately offered the services of her Army Cadets. She said “Being Army Air Corps cadets we traditionally have a mascot that fits with the Eagle on our cap badge. We clubbed together and sponsored Jack the Eagle Owl at the sanctuary and offered to help to clean up and rebuild the facilities”

Working in the community is a significant part not only of the Cadet Learning Syllabus, but also counts as credit towards those participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Many of the cadets involved in this project are progressing towards the Gold Award. Cadet Issa Khleif (16) of Haslemere Ave Hounslow West (pictured), a construction student at West Thames College says “ Its a fantastic project. I’ve enjoyed all the parts of it, its helped with my studies and also great to be able to help in the community”. Both he and his twin brother Cadet Lance Corporal Nasir Khleif ( also pictured) have worked on the project.

Owlkeeper and owner of Heathrow Owl Rescue Terry Travis was very excited about the support the Army Cadets had given. He said “This has been a tremendous help. We rely entirely on voluntary donations and simply could not have afforded the cost of the work that these young people have done in clearing away and building new fences, gates and smart new aviaries for the birds. They and their leaders are a real credit.”

Later in the year there will be a formal presentation evening at Heston Cadet HQ to inaugurate Eagle Owl Jack as the Heston Army Cadet mascot, and to seal the link between the Army cadets and the sanctuary.
