When North Hykeham detachment’s Cadet Staff Sergeant Tegan Aplin was informed at Annual Camp that she was to be the new HM Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet she was elated.
Last week, at a special ceremony hosted at Sobraon Barracks, she stood shoulder to shoulder with her Air Cadet, Sea Cadet and Combined Cadet Force counterparts to receive her award from Mr Toby Dennis, HM Lord Lieutenant for Lincolnshire.
Before the presentation, citations explaining the reasons behind their selection were read out to the audience, which included local dignitaries and family members.
A delighted Cllr Eddy Rigby, Mayor North Hykeham Town Council, commented: “It was a great and educational evening for myself and my wife as I never knew the range of activities and interests that the Cadets were involved in. I found every one of those young people so inspirational and an absolute credit to them, their families and to the Cadet ethos.”
Tegan’s citation referenced her many achievements, which included her sporting prowess and her effectiveness as a senior cadet, a role that includes responsibility for training junior cadets.
Colonel Jeremy Field MBE, Commandant of Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force, stated that she was a ‘loyal, trustworthy, conscientious, meticulous, articulate and polite young lady. Someone who puts others before herself.’
The criteria for the position is very demanding but for Tegan and the other HM Lord Lieutenant Cadets the reward is an exciting year ahead.
Tegan is relishing her new duties: “To have a role in events such as the Remembrance Day Service and with the possibility of meeting members of the Royal Family – well, that’s going to be fantastic,” she said.
Tegan really values the life skills that the Cadets have helped her develop and how her confidence has grown. When she first joined the Army Cadets, over 4 years ago, she lacked confidence but today she is a very different person. “I’m conscious that I now have more responsibility and my appearance is important as I must look my best when fulfilling my duties,” she added.
Tegan is now the Senior Cadet of 1 Company, which covers the units in and around Lincoln, including her own North Hykeham detachment, where she has been based since 2015.
Apart from fulfilling her role as HM Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire’s Cadet, Tegan is working towards her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, so she can look forward to a very busy 12 months.
