On parade at Summer Camp

Based in the heart of Wales and stretching from Machynlleth and Welshpool in the north to Newport and Caerphilly in the south, Gwent & Powys ACF has a proud and rich heritage across the centre of Wales. We welcome young people and Adult Volunteers from within the mid Wales counties who are interested in taking part in something a little bit different.

The Army Cadet Force is a Voluntary Youth Organisation. It is sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and provides progressive and challenging military, adventurous and community activities for young people between the ages of 12 - 18. Its aim is to inspire young people to achieve success in life, to push them to the limit with a spirit of service to the King, their Country and their local community, and to develop in them the qualities of a good citizen - whilst having lots of FUN. The training offered helps foster self-confidence, teamwork, leadership, resilience and determination - all of which can be practically applied to everyday life.

So what about the Adult Volunteers, you may ask? Why do they do it? Well, there are many reasons, and if you ask, they all have their own story. But, in essence, they all want to give something back - to inspire, raise aspirations, challenge mindsets, and help to shape future generations. Our adults are amazing, inspiration role models and we are so lucky to have such a fantastic G&P Family. In addition, there are many opportunities for self development, with courses from Leadership through to Canoeing - there is something for everyone to support developing their own skills. Many of these are free and are transferable into civilian life, supporting personal development and enhancing your own skillset and CV.

Whether you have previous military experience or none at all, it doesn't matter - all training and support is provided. Why not get in touch and come and give us a try? We might be just what you're looking for!

From Shooting to Fieldcraft, Skill at Arms, Map and Compass, First Aid, Drill and Survival Skills, Cadets also have the opportunity to train and compete in many sporting activities such as football, rugby, swimming, and orienteering to mention a few. We live in the heart of adventurous training country, which offers our cadets unique opportunities for adventurous and outward bound activities. Mountain climbing, canoeing, rock climbing and hill marching are all activities that our cadets take part in. In addition to the traditional 'green' activities, cadets can also opt to follow the Military Band or Corps of Drums syllabus, either alongside or as an alternative to the green syllabus. As well as this, there are many opportunities to gain nationally recognised qualifications to support in preparing for the world of work, including Duke of Edinburgh, Institute of Leadership and Management Awards and First Aid at Work.

The Band and Drums

Music is one of the alternative pathways that the ACF offers, and here at G&P cadets can choose to specialise in music through joining the Band and Drums, or take music in addition to the green ACS.

Regardless of standard or choice of instrument, youngsters are welcome to join and take part in the Band’s busy schedule of engagements both in the United Kingdom and abroad, in engagements such as military tattoos in Germany, Holland and Malta. During the past few years, groups of cadets have performed for Her Majesty the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, alongside other members of the Royal Family. They have trained with the Band of the Welsh Guards and performed on Horseguards Parade in London. Twice a year, Army Cadet Force Military Bands, Corps of Drums and Pipes and Drums from across the UK join together for week-long camps during Easter and October half terms, in which well over 500 cadets at all levels play and learn together, culminating in performances in one of the largest musical ensembles in the country. By following the Army Cadet Force syllabus, cadets have the opportunity to gain BTECs in music or public services, as well as gain other key life skills. From competent players to complete beginners, everyone is welcome - we could be just what you're looking for!

To find out more about the Band and Drums, why not get in touch? Come and join us if you dare to be different!
