Story & pictures by Capt Chris Townson, 2iC No 5 (Anzio) Company & County DofE Officer
Over the May bank holiday weekend 19 cadets from across the County formed 3 teams and completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh qualifying expedition. The groups had chosen to complete their expedition in the Lake District.
The cadets arrived at Holcombe Moor Training Centre on Friday evening (3rd May) met their supervisors and assessors then after a quick kit check travelled up to the campsite just outside Keswick. As the minibuses begun to approach the area in which the campsite was the weather started to turn. Fortunatley it was only a short burst of rain and sleet which passed over as we arrived to the actual site which was good for the cadets and staff who were able to pitch their tents and settle in for the night.
Day 1 – Saturday was a chilly start but dry. A sprinkling of snow on the peaks of the surrounding mountains set the scene. After a quick breakfast the teams moved to the start point and started day 1 with great enthusiasm. The day started bright but with a cold biting wind, making the conditions testing in the exposed areas of the route. The groups took this in their stride and each time the staff met them at a checkpoint the teams where constantly smiling.
Day 2 – Sunday saw the groups have a later start with their routes taking them down the east side of the Derwent to their campsite just outside a small village of Grange at the most southern tip of the Derwent.
Day 3 – Monday the final day, their route took the teams along the west side of the Derwent skirting the lower edge of Cat bells to the finish point just outside of Keswick.
After a quick lunch and debrief it was time to head south back to Holcombe Moore, the teams returned all their stores and cleaned the vehicles before heading home for a well-deserved rest.
The final stage of the expedition is the group presentations of their expedition which will be taking place over the next few weeks.
A huge thank you to the staff that supported the weekend.
