Welcome to Blaydon Detachment

I can definitely say from my cadet experience that “you get back from the ACF more than you put in”. One story I will tell for the rest of my life is how I was invited to Her Majesty's Garden Party in 2010 and I achieved that through the ACF always aim higher.

SI Christopher Burns (Detachment Commander)

Blaydon Detachment is located on Blaydon Bank and is the only Detachment in the company to wear the cap-badge of the Royal Engineers (RE) – which makes us a unique Detachment! The Detachment parades on Mondays and Wednesday between 19.00 hours and 21.00 hours. Anyone aged 12-18 and in Year 8 or above at school is welcome to join us.

The cadets enjoy variety of activities, including:

  • Drill and turnout
  • Living in the field
  • Shooting
  • Skill at Arms
  • Map and Compass
  • Lots of other courses in the ACF
  • But you will also learn non-military skills to like:
  • First Aid
  • Skills for Life
  • Sports (Football, Hockey, athletics, orienteering)
  • Adventurous Training (rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, hiking).

The Army Cadet Force is demanding - sometimes challenging, and very rewarding. You will gain:

  • Confidence
  • Assertiveness
  • Stamina
  • Bravery
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Problem-solving
  • Decision-making

Lots of new skills and unique experiences. The ACF is serious fun too.

If you think you can take on a challenge then we are for you. To join the Blaydon Detachment just turn up at the Detachment, and speak to one of our staff or e-mail any questions to

** The Army Cadets is always looking for Adult Instructors. Do you think you could give up two nights a week and the odd weekend over the year? Check us out at for more information
