The award of the prestigious Jim Hewitt Trophy for 2019 to Cadet Sergeant Harvey McGow-Stone was announced at a presentation at the end of the cadet shooting competition in Sennybridge.
The award was marked with a presentation of a personal trophy to Cadet Sergeant McGow-Stone by Col LT Williams. The formal trophy will be presented in due course.
Harvey 16 from Hope has been a member of Rossett detachment for three years. During that time he has completed his four start training and is currently working towards his Master Cadet award. A keen sportsman he has competed in regional and national events together with shooting at local and brigade level.
The Jim Hewitt Trophy for Excellence is presented in memory of the late Major Jim Hewitt who for many years was a Cadet Executive Officer in the Army Cadet Force in North Wales. Major Hewitt lived and breathed the Cadets, encouraging young people to achieve success in life in the spirit of service to their country, their local community and their drive to succeed
The trophy depicting Jim Hewitt on his beloved motor bike was made by sculptor and designer Judy Boyt. The award was initiated in 2014 and is presented to a cadet, irrespective of rank, who has made an outstanding contribution to Clwyd and Gwynedd ACF during the year.
Rossett Detachment Commander Alex Elliott said “I’m very proud of Harvey and the award is well deserved for all the hard work from joining as a recruit from the Rossett village festival to now which included Cambrian, CADSAAM and many many other events. He is a prime example of how a cadet and NCO should hold and apply themselves”
Company Commander Gavin Jones said “I am very proud of Sgt McGow-Stone on being awarded the Jim Hewitt Award. Sgt Stone is exactly the type of cadet that Jim would have been proud of. Well done”
Clwyd and Gwynedd Army Cadets Commandant Col LT Williams congratulated Harvey saying he was an inspiration to other cadets and can look forward to a successful cadet career.
