Leadership Course success leads to Walton Detachment celebrating triple promotions.

10 March 2018

Army Cadets and their Adult Leaders from Walton Detachment, No 1 (Hereward) Company, Cambridgeshire Army Cadets proudly stood on parade to receive awards from their Cadet Commandant, Colonel Mark Knight MBE.

Senior Cadet Staff Sergeant Hobbs was promoted to Cadet Sergeant Major following a successful selection board at County HQ. Cadet Sergeant Major Hobbs has just completed her Senior Cadet Instruction Cadre (SCIC) and looks forward to attending Master Cadet Course in May. Cadet Sergeant Lytle has also successfully completed his Senior Cadet Instruction Cadre in the same week.

Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Kate Blundell and Sergeant Jon Blundell (husband and wife) both attended the Cadet Force Commissioning Board at Westbury in February. Not only is it unusual to have 2 adults from the same Detachment but having a “husband and wife” team is quite rare too.

Both succeeded in being awarded the Queens Cadet Force Commission in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant which takes them on the path to other roles within the Company and County. Some 23 years ago Kate and Jon Blundell met in Cambridgeshire ACF, Kate a young detachment commander and one of the first female instructors in Cambs ACF, and Jon had just left the Army and was looking to give something back to the community as a Kayak Instructor. Work commitments saw Kate resigning in 1996 as she moved to Jersey. Jon and Kate were married in 1999. After a spell of travelling Kate returned to the ACF in 2011. In 2016 Jon joined the ACF to help Kate at detachment and as quoted later to say “it’s the only way to spend time with my wife”. Jon successfully completed his adult training in October 2017 becoming a Sergeant Instructor.

Colonel Mark Knight MBE presented the awards and addressed the Detachment saying: “I congratulate all cadets at Walton Detachment for their excellent turnout and training progression. I am particularly pleased to award these badges and promotions as its only due to tremendous commitment and dedication that these were possible”.
