Music in Our Battalion

We are now looking to recruit cadets with a mixed level of talent, from beginners to competent musicians and drummers, as the 1st NI Battalion has a Military Band and a Corps of Drums there is a wide array of instruments for you to play.

We are also interested in recruiting cadets who play or wish to learn to play the bagpipes as part of our musical team.

The Army Cadet Force music activity is structured, progressive and achievable. By following a structured syllabus, you can now gain the BTEC First Diploma in Music, equivalent to four GCSE at A*-C

It offers a sensible approach to learning which also provides maximum opportunity for achievement. The syllabus has been devised to cater for all forms of instrumentation incorporated within a military band, corps of drums.

There are four levels of achievement in total and these are linked directly to the Music Qualifications Board syllabus. However, there are strict guidelines regarding the Army Cadet Force star awards and music within the Army Cadet Force.

The Army Cadet Force offers two career paths up to 4 Star - the APC military syllabus and the APC music syllabus. All cadets must complete their 1 Star APC military proficiency before progressing through the APC music syllabus although this can be completed concurrently with the music training.

Cadets also have the option of completing both the APC military and APC music proficiencies. Many cadets are achieving both awards. Cadets who do achieve both are normally of a very high calibre and highly motivated individuals.

Twice a year, all ACF Bands and Drums gather for a National ‘Music Concentration “

This is a week-long Music Camp in which over 500 cadets at all levels, from across the country play and learn together. Culminating in a series of examinations and performances in one of the largest musical ensembles in the country.

Throughout Northern Ireland, our band has led our battalion on different parades such as Armed Forces Day and at different Remembrance parades as well as carrying out displays for different civilian functions.

If you would be interested in joining but feel you do not have any musical experience, don’t let that hold you back as many of our Cadets had no musical knowledge up until they attended a band practice.
